I would say the 'essential' books that everyone should have in their library are those books that actually help you with your magic. If you have a particular problem, or you are interested in a particular performer/creator because they inspire you, you should buy the books that answer those questions, or help you study a certain Magician because they inspire you. Anything else is just pure indulgence.

I have bought hundreds of books over the 40 years I have been doing magic, but only a handful have actually affected my magic throughout all that time. The rest just take up space and only remain in my home because I like the idea of having lots of books in my library. The quest to improve my magic has over the years taken second place to my want to be a book collector.

Having said that, there are perhaps the 'usual suspects' that occupy the 'must have' list: 'Encyclopaedia of Card Tricks' by Jean Hugard; 'The Royal Road To Card Magic' by Hugard and Braue; 'Expert at the Card Table' by Erdnase; 'Modern Coin Magic' by Bobo. Those are bare 'essentials' you should have, even if you never have any others. And, fortunately, all of them are Royalty-Free and available as free PDF downloads via google.

The Books of Wonder have been said, but I'll say it again because they are phenomenal. One my all time favorite books is The Complete Works of Derek Dingle by Richard Kaufman. Darwin also wrote The Annotated Erdnase, but as the name suggests, it's just The Expert at the Card Table with Darwin's annotations, pictures, and a few extra sleights he included so while it is very good if you can get it, I wouldn't label it as a necessity if you already have EATCT.
